Can You Do It?

Yes, you can. But first safety is always the most important. Shut off your power, disengage your capacitors and make sure you're not going to get shocked. From there you just need the tools and the patience. Is this plug-and-play? Sometimes it is, but in many cases, it may not be depending on your unit and needs. Below is a list of tools to help you get the job done.

Tools Needed:

• Drill Set - Power drill with access to several different heads. Most common are Phillips, 1/4, and 5/16 fittings.
• Flat Head Screw Driver - It's your best friend to help pry things apart and get leverage when needed.
• Pliers - You need these for helping to pull things off such as terminal leads.
• Wire Strippers/Cutters - To adapt and strip wiring to match up to your unit's specs.
• Wrench - For loosening and tightening bolts or set screws.
• Measuring Tape - You'll need this to make sure you position the fan blade correctly on the new motor.
• Multi-Use Lubricant Spray - Something to loosen up all those years of use.
• Voltage Meter - Have to have this. It will help you make sure power is off and items are disengaged before servicing. It can also reveal voltage shortages or inaccurate voltage feeds.
• Capacitor-Discharge Pen Or Electrical Grounded Screw Driver - This is what you can use to disengage the capacitor.
• Fan Blade Puller - You most likely will need this as most fans have been on units for years and are stuck on there like glue.
• Sawzall Tool - In some cases, you need to cut the shaft down to match the original or cut the shaft to the old motor to get it off. Just make sure you have metal cutting blades or it won't work correctly.
